Wrapped up Black History Month by sharing my latest picture book Black Joy with the incredible students and families at Nathan Hale Middle School in Meriden, CT. @quartokids @lhaizamorena

As the guest author, I had the honor of reading and witnessing firsthand the power of storytelling to uplift, inspire, and spark meaningful conversations. The room was filled with laughter, curiosity, and so much JOY.

Black history isn’t just about the past; it’s about the present and future, too. And while February may be coming to a close, Black history is every day.

As always, I’ll be continuing to celebrate, acknowledge, and amplify Black voices all year long.

Derrick Barnes’s groundbreaking novel masterfully combines a modern-day allegory with classic-style tall tales to weave a compelling story of America’s strange obsession with the Black body, relegated to labor or entertainment. Spanning the 1800s to today, it shows how much has changed over centuries. . . and, at the same time, how little.

This uplifting story follows young Tabitha, who greets the sun every morning—until one day, it’s nowhere to be found. Determined to bring the light back, she hops on her strawberry shortcake bike with her puppy by her side, in search of the sun.

But what she finds is something even more powerful: sometimes, the light we’re looking for is already inside us.

Tab’s signature positivity shines through every page, making this a great read-aloud for little readers who may need a reminder that their inner light is always glowing and shining bright.

I really like the messages of self-love, resilience and positivity. The writing is simple yet meaningful, perfect for little readers ages 4 to 8.

The illustrations by @olivia.duchess are beautifully done. They are so joyful, vibrant and full of warmth just like Tab herself.
