11 Kids Movies We Can’t Wait to See in 2016 (Plus Bonus Movies for Adults)!

As much as I like to read, I also love going to the movie theater to watch movies!  Especially when the movie first debuts or if I’m lucky enough to attend a pre-screening prior to the movie being released to the general public.  I don’t get a chance to watch much TV at home so going to the movies and being able to actually sit and watch an entire movie from start to finish is a real treat for me…(it’s the little things).

The kids and I have seen our fair share of kids movies over the past couple of years from Zootopia to The Good Dinosaur.  And while some parents of two and three year olds may not be so willing to bring their kids to the movies, I would take my kids to a new movie every other weekend or at the very least once a month if there were enough supply of kids movies to meet our demand.  Surprisingly, my kids actually do sit and watch the movies, but only when we’re in the theater – at home is a totally different story.  Go figure!

Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

Confession: I started reading this book last year, but for some reason it didn’t hold my attention.  I know lots of other people raved about it.  I’ll just wait for the movie to come out to see what the hype around this book is all about.

Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Haley Bennett, Edgar Ramirez and Allison Janney star in DreamWorks Pictures’ THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods). In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds. Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train is adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson and Taylor. The film’s executive producers are Jared LeBoff and Celia Costas, and it will be released by Universal Pictures.

Passport to Connecticut Libraries: Week 1

Tomorrow is the day!  The start to the 2nd annual Passport to Connecticut Libraries program.  I recently told you about my plans to participate in this program for the second time, but now I’m bringing the kids with me.  Yes, we’re hitting the road and going “mobile” to explore some of the great libraries our state has to offer.  You can read my previous post here to learn more about the program.

Passport to CT LibrariesWeek 1

Here are the libraries we plan to visit during the first week of the program:

  • Cromwell Belden Public Library (Cromwell)
  • Portland Public Library (Portland)
  • Cora J. Belden Public Library (Rocky Hill)
  • Russell Library (Middletown)
  • Wethersfield Public Library (Wethersfield)

  • Lucy Robbins Welles Library (Newington)
  • Levi E. Coe Public Library (Middlefield)
  • Welles-Turner Memorial Library (Glastonbury)
  • New Britian Public Library (New Britian) – New addition!

After exploring each library and getting our “passports” stamped, we also plan to visit a few nearby kid-friendly places within close proximity to each library.  Our plan is to work on this project during the weekends and on some weeknights after I finish working.  I’m looking forward to hitting the library trail once again this time with my two little ones (and maybe some friends) in tow!

Here are a few of the places we plan to visit during week 1:

  • Riverfront Park Playground (Glastonbury, CT) – This new playground is simply beautiful…we love it!
  • Romp & Roll (Wethersfield, CT) – An extremely fun place for kids to roll around and get exhausted!
  • Pierson Park Playground (Cromwell, CT) – My kids love going to this playground and it’s so close to the library!
  • Kid City Children’s Museum (Middletown, CT) – We frequent this place at least once a month.  It’s located directly across the street from the library – so convenient!
  • Cherry Berry (Middletown, CT) – Because who doesn’t love fresh frozen yogurt!  Located around the corner from the library within walking distance if it’s a nice day outside.
  • Lyman Orchards (Middlefield, CT) – We adore Lyman Orchards for both their food and activities for children!
  • Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) – One of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America!  We plan to walk on the dinosaur trail which is free and open to the public.
  • Peckham Park (Middlefield, CT) – Peckham Park has a nice variety of equipment and activities for kids of all ages.
  • New Britian Youth Museum (New Britian, CT) – Located directly across from the library in the same parking lot!

Hope to see you on the library trail!

5 Last-Minute Ways We’re Celebrating Easter

I love this time of year.  For me, Easter is a time of celebration, joy and hope.  There’s much realization for me about the power of the cross and God’s presence in this season of my life.  Easter is my yearly reminder of God’s transcendent love, and a reminder of our responsibility to “pay it forward”.

This year I really wanted to be intentional with Easter and come up with some fun activities to engage my kids. However, I was traveling for work for a few days, so I didn’t have time to plan out activities and fun things to do like I did last year during Holy Week.  And now with Easter being just three days away, I have no time to worry about elaborate crafts or fancy Pinterest activities.  Can you relate?

I just want to use the next few days to introduce the Easter story and plant seeds for important conversations about God’s sacrifice. I want to keep it as simple, purposeful and straight forward as possible for my kids’ short attention spans.

In addition to reading some great books, here are the other activities we have lined up for the next few days leading up to Easter.

5 Last-Minute Ways We're Celebrating Easter

1. We’re Going on a Nature Walk
Weather permitting, we’ll be going on a Good Friday nature walk at a nearby park.  This is a simple activity and it won’t cost you a thing (except a few cents to print out the free printables).  The Unlikely Homeschool has put together these wonderful cards to help guide conversation during your walk as a family or group.  The cards walk children through a scriptural account of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, His crucifixion, and His resurrection, all while they spend time outside appreciating God’s creation.  {free printable}

2. We’re Reading the Bible
This is one of my favorite Bibles that the children own.  The kids love it too!  Over the next few days we’ll be reading select passages and stories from this Bible related to the resurrection.

This incredibly clear and easy to understand Storybook Bible uses the rich, full-color illustrations of African-American artist Victor Hogan. The easy to read text is adapted from the International Children’s Bible, the Children of Color Storybook shows African-American and other children of color that they are an important part of God’s Word and His plan for the world. These 61 well-known stories of biblical characters and events helps children build self-esteem and serve as foundation for building Christian character and moral values. Both you and the child will love this book and it’s clarity.

3. We’re Cooking
There are so many wonderful Easter-themed recipes available to help teach kids the true meaning of Easter and the resurrection.  Below are a few that I like.  What are some of your favorites to try?

Resurrection Rolls | Resurrection Cookies | Empty Tomb Rolls Easter Tomb Biscuits Empty Tomb Cake

4. We’re Coloring
Coloring certainly won’t help your kids understand the true meaning of Easter, but it’s something fun and doesn’t require much effort.  Plus, coloring is a great way to enhance those fine motor skills!  Here are the coloring sheets we’ll be using. {free printables}

5. We’re Planting Magic Jelly Beans
This is a really cute Easter tradition I started with the kids last year…planting magic jelly beans on Easter Eve!  Simply plant some jelly beans into your own homemade wheat grass or use the grass outside in your yard.  Do this with the kids.  Then, early in the morning before the kids wake up (or right after they fall asleep at night) “plant” some lollipops in place of the jelly beans.  The kids will be so excited when they wake up and see their magic jelly beans have turned into a mini garden of lollipops.  So fun! {free magic jelly beans packet printable}

I hope these simple ideas help you and your kids celebrate Easter this weekend while having some fun.  Happy Easter!

Your turn: How will you celebrate the deeper meaning of Easter with your little ones this year?  How does your family celebrate Easter?  Do you have any fun crafts, games, recipes or activities you do?  Feel free to share in the comments.

Get Thee to the Library: Passport to Connecticut Libraries Program

Next month the kids and I will be hitting the road and participating in the 2nd annual Passport to Connecticut Libraries program!

Based on the Wine Trail Passport Program in CT, Passport to Connecticut Libraries is a statewide program running throughout the month of April 2016 in celebration of National Library Week. This year, 124 of the 160 public libraries in the state are participating in the program.  The purpose of this program is “to build awareness of the value of a library card, as well as to encourage residents to explore the amazing diversity of resources available at public libraries,” according to the Connecticut Library Association.

If you live in Connecticut and wish to participate, “get thee to your local library” on April 1st to pick up your Passport.  A staff member will stamp it and give you a token gift to get you started. Then, take your Passport along as you visit other participating libraries. At each visit, you must show your library card, and then the library will stamp your passport and give you another small gift.

Passport-to-CT-Libraries

If you visit at least five (5) participating libraries and return your passport to a participating library by May 6, 2016 then you will be entered into one state-wide drawing for a chance to win a $150 Visa gift card for adults (18 and up) and a $100 Visa gift card for children (under 18). This is a state-wide contest where four winners will be selected: one adult and one child from a random drawing from all who visited at least five libraries, and one adult and one child from a random drawing from all who visited the most libraries.  The drawing will be held on June 1st and the winners will be informed by telephone and mailed their prize.

Doesn’t that sound like fun?  Ok, I know it doesn’t sound fun to everyone, but if you’re a fellow bibliophile and library lover like me, it should be right up your alley.

I participated in this program on my own back in 2014 when it was first introduced.  At that time, my kids were ages 1 & 2 so to take them along with me to each library I visited would have been too much of a hassle.  Now that they are both a year older and more independent, they’ll be joining me on this adventure!  In addition to visiting different libraries, we also plan to check out some other local book stores and family-friendly/kid-friendly places within the vicinity of the library.

I’ve already started reaching out to a few different kid-friendly places that I want to check out while in each town.  While we don’t plan to visit all 124 libraries, we certainly plan to check out as many as we can and explore some other fun places we’ve never been to before.

Each week in April, I’ll be writing about the various libraries we visit and letting you know where else we go afterwards so stay tuned!

I think this project will be a great way to showcase some of Connecticut’s amazing libraries and incorporate some family fun at the same time.  I also hope to give ideas to parents and caregivers who are looking for other kid-friendly places in the area to bring kids after visiting the library.

For more details and a full list of participating libraries, visit the Passport to Connecticut Libraries Facebook Page.

If you’d like me and the kids to visit your kid-friendly business while exploring the Connecticut library trail, please e-mail me at: hereweeread{at}gmail.com.

Your turn:  What kid-friendly places should we visit in your Connecticut town while on the CT library trail?  Does your state also have a program like this?  Feel free to share in the comments or contact me directly.

Kids Read the World: A Kid World Citizen Initiative

A few days ago while browsing on Instagram, I found out about an awesome initiative that I just had to share!  By now you should know how passionate I am about reading and books, so naturally I would be intrigued by this amazing project that Becky Morales from Kid World Citizen has started.

Becky is an ESL teacher and mom to 5 kids.  Her husband is from Mexico, and she is from the US.  When they had their two daughters, Becky began looking for ways to incorporate Mexican culture into their family life. Soon, they adopted their son from China, and a couple of years later, another son from Ethiopia.  As their family grew, they expanded their celebrations, books, and music to include all of their heritage cultures.

Kid World Citizen
Becky decided to start a blog to help other adoptive families honor and learn about their children’s cultural backgrounds. Many of her readers were adoptive families, but she soon realized that many parents – of all backgrounds – were looking for ways to teach their kids about the world. Parents are interested in raising little global citizens who are aware of others inside and outside their communities. Becky wanted this for for their children too, so she expanded her blog to include the whole world. Hence the name, Kid World Citizen.Becky has been blogging for several years reading tons of books set around the world. Yet, when she read the jacket covers, most often the author was from the US. While the books were taking place around the world, they were not written by authors of the specific culture, who grew up in the particular country. Wanting to experience world cultures from the perspectives of their citizens, she began to look for children’s books that have been translated into English.

One day while Becky was playing on Facebook, serendipity struck: She clicked on a TED talk of a woman who had read an adult’s book from every country. It was the catalyst she needed to begin. She showed her kids Ann Morgan’s talk and they all agreed they would try to read a kid’s book from every country.

It’s not a simple task, and may prove to be unattainable: there are many countries that have few publishing houses (or none at all). If they have published children’s books, it is possible that none of have been translated.

Becky decided to start an editable google doc, where she could crowdsource ideas. She called out to her networks and asked friends, family, teachers, librarians, and organizations to suggest book titles.

The project “Kids Read the World” is just at the beginning stages. They are looking for recommendations of favorite, original children’s books (translated) from every country in the world. They are hoping to read classic books that are enjoyed by kids around the planet: picture books, traditional stories, folktales, picture books or easy chapter books.

Kids Read the World
The best part?  The live document is editable, and anyone can read it and add to it!  That’s right, Kid World Citizen is asking readers to look over the list, and add any book titles under the appropriate countries. When they finish with the list, they will also share that so that others can read their way around the world!  What a neat project, wouldn’t you agree?  I can’t wait to see the final list of books!

I hope you’ll join Becky and our friends over at Kid World Citizen in researching books titles and compiling the master list!

Your turn:  What translated books from around the world would you add to the list?  Feel free to share in the comments.

Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day: December 5th

We’ve all heard of “Take Your Child to Work Day” and “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, but did you know the first Saturday in December is designated for “Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day”?  If you have heard of it, then maybe I’m just a little late to the party, but if you haven’t – read on!

TakeYourChildToABookstoreBanner
Unfortunately, the kids and I may not be able to participate this year as we already have a kid’s birthday party scheduled as well as a another event planned later that day.  However, I wanted to let all of you know about it in case you want to take your little ones to a participating bookstore near you.

Saturday, December 5th, is the sixth annual Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day. Founded by novelist Jenny Milchman, TYCBD has grown from 80 stores participating in its first year to 700 this year across all 50 states, Canada, Europe and Australia. Milchman was inspired by taking her own young children to bookstores: “Did all children know the pleasure of spending time in a bookstore? I wanted to begin a holiday that would expose as many kids as possible to this joy.”

Each bookstore plans their own events, a mix of everything from story time, giveaways, children’s author visits and even a few canine companions for kids to read to. Participating stores can be found on this interactive map.

What a great initiative that encourages families across the country to visit their local bookstores as a way to encourage literacy and love of reading.  I love this idea and totally support it!

While I do purchase some books online from Amazon, I still enjoy physically going into a bookstore.  Online shopping just can’t beat things like: face-to-face interaction with friendly, knowledgeable staff, comfortable and bright reading nooks and spaces to unwind, an array of refreshments, in-store author events, and of course, story time for the little ones.

Have I convinced you to check it out yet?  If there is a child in your life, won’t you consider taking him/her to a bookstore this December 5th?  I hope you’ll join me in spreading the word about this wonderful event.

For more information about Take Your Child to the Bookstore Day go here.

Your turn:  How often do you take your little readers to the bookstore?  Have you attended a Take Your Child to the Bookstore Day event in the past?  Feel free to share in the comments.

Reflection: Roses, Buds, and Thorns

This blog post has been on my mind for a few weeks now.  While it’s not literacy related, I hope you will enjoy it.

Several years ago shortly after President Obama took office, I remember reading an article about a dinnertime family tradition the Obamas had called Roses and Thorns.  I never forgot it and made a mental note to have that same tradition with my family some day.  We still haven’t put it into practice yet since my children are still young, but I’m going to introduce it to my husband so him and I can get into the habit of doing it.  Then the kids will eventually be included as they get older.  Our family will adopt the ‘Roses, Buds, and Thorns’ tradition rather than just ‘Roses and Thorns’.  Let me explain.

roses and thorns

So, what is Roses, Buds, and Thorns?
This family activity works great around the dinner table or as part of your bedtime routine. Each member of the family takes turns describing their Roses, Thorns, and Buds.  Roses are the best part of your day.  Thorns are the worst part of your day, and Buds are what you are looking forward to tomorrow.

Lately, life has been pretty hectic for me and I’ve been feeling like I’ve been experiencing more thorns than roses.  Between juggling projects at work, traveling, dealing with the kids, house work, blogging, and everything else that I manage to do, sometimes it all seems like too much.  But then when I look back in my gratitude journal it reminds me that life isn’t all roses or all thorns.  We all need a little bit of both thrown in with some buds to keep us inspired and motivated.

I find that sometimes it’s hard to share our struggles (thorns) as none of us wants to be seen as weak or needy. Likewise, it can be difficult to say our wins (roses) out loud, too, for fear we seem boastful or even shallow.  But sharing those things, the ones that lodge in our throats and live in the center of our hearts? That is how we truly build trust, relationships and community.

In an effort to be more transparent, today I thought we could share a little bit of ourselves here in this place.  I’ll start with my roses, buds and thorns, then you are free to share yours in the comments.  Sound good?

Roses:  My daughter will be celebrating her 3rd birthday soon.  The kids are excited about starting preschool and pre-K3 in September.  This blog that started out as a space for me to keep track of the books I read to the kids has turned into much more than I expected (in a good way).  I met a new local mom friend!  We planned our first family vacation where all four of us will be traveling.  I’m teaching myself a new language.

Thorns: I sometimes struggle with balancing my time and priorities since I work from home.  I get so caught up in work that I sometimes forget to take a break to eat or walk away from the computer to clear my head.  Lately, I’ve been dealing with different issues related to work projects putting in extra hours.  As a result, I’ve been falling behind on house work and blog posts I wanted to write over the past few weeks.

Buds: Hoping to see my sister and some other family members in the coming months.  Finally wrapping up this work project in production.  Start making money from blogging online.  Potty training my son.  Finish writing my book.  Pray more, worry and stress less.

Your turn:  What do the roses, buds and thorns in your life look like?  Where are you winning? Where are you struggling?  What things are you hoping for or looking forward to?

Our Latest Obsession: Tenzi!

In our family, Sunday is reserved for Family Day.  It’s the one day of the week we make it a point to spend quality time together doing family-friendly activities.  A few weeks ago, I started looking for different games we could play as a family and I stumbled upon Tenzi.  This gem is great for the entire family to play.  Yes, even daddy gets in on the fun – score!

What Is Tenzi?
Tenzi is our absolute favorite family game right now.  It’s is a fast paced dice game that can literally keep you entertained for hours. It’s easy for kids of all ages to participate and our family has crazy fun when we play.  Sparkles seems to understand the concept of the game, but Mr. Tickles is too young to know what’s going on.  He just gets a kick out of throwing his dice around!

Each player has their own set of colored dice.  When the game starts, everyone starts rolling their dice as fast as they can. With each roll, a player may choose to keep a certain number. Once they have all 10 dice on the same number, that player will shout “Tenzi!” declaring them the winner of the game. The other players continue rolling until they’ve all gotten 10 matching dice.  There are lots of variations, which are included in the instructions, and we enjoy all of them. It’s a race against chance and everyone is dying to yell “Tenzi!” before anybody else does.

I know you’re probably thinking – “That’s it?!” Yes, that’s it – sort of. Because the play is so fast and furious (and close), you find yourself wanting to play “just one more round”. You can run through multiple rounds in just a few minutes.  Oh yeah, and once you’ve mastered Tenzi, there are a few other game options mentioned in the instructions, like “Splitzi” where you must now get five of one number and five of another to win.

Still confused?  Watch this video below to see Tenzi in action.

A very worthwhile addition to Tenzi is an expansion card deck 77 Ways to Play Tenzi.  I’ve read the games on the cards open up so many more creative ways to use the Tenzi dice!  We didn’t purchase the expansion card deck, but we may if we ever decide to spice up the game a bit.

Sunday afternoons and game nights have been a lot more fun lately since we started playing Tenzi!

Your turn:  What are your family’s favorite games? Have you ever played Tenzi before?  How and when does your family play together?  Feel free to let me know in the comments.
