Beverly Cleary’s 100th Birthday Book Giveaway!

On April 12th, beloved author Beverly Cleary is turning 100 years old!  Best known for her stories about Ramona Quimby, her sister Beezus, and their friend Henry, Cleary has written more than 40 books.  Her stories have been captivating readers of all ages for more 60 years. From the Mouse and the Motorcycle to Socks the Cat, her characters and the tales they inhabit are still going strong all these decades later.

Inspiring kids to love reading, especially struggling readers like herself as a child, has been a lifelong mission for Cleary who grew up on a farm in Yamhill, Oregon—a town so small it had no library.

Today, people all across the world celebrate Cleary on her birthday.  In fact, Harper Collins Publishing recognizes April 12th—as “DROP EVERYTHING AND READ” (D.E.A.R.) Day.  Check out the official website here.

To celebrate Beverly Cleary’s 100th birthday, I’ve collaborated with three other awesome bloggers to give you a chance to win our “Beverly Cleary 100th Birthday Prize Pack.”

5 Women Authors to Watch Plus a Giveaway!

In honor of Black History month, today I wanted to draw your attention to some promising women authors to keep an eye out for. Mark my words: you are going to hear much more about them in years to come!

Though they may not all be household names yet, some have already achieved national recognition and established steady careers as writers. From non-fiction to children’s fiction and poetry, these five authors will give us plenty to read in 2016 and beyond.  They all have published empowering books about young African-American girls, varying from blazing adventures at the zoo, to the importance of self-worth, to adoption.

5 Women Authors to Watch Plus a Giveaway!

Here are five women authors to watch listed in random order.  (P.S. The information for the giveaway is listed at the end.  Good Luck!)

1. Rachel Garlinghouse
rachelgarlinghouse
Rachel is a mother of 3 African-American children through domestic, transracial, open adoption. She taught college composition at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for nine years before “retiring” to focus on writing and speaking. Her work and experiences has been featured on MSNBC, NPR, Huffington Post Live, Scary Mommy, ABCnews.com, My Brown Baby, Madame Noire, and in Essence magazine, just to name a few. She’s the facilitator of a large St. Louis area adoption triad and fostering support group for women. Her first children’s book, Black Girls Can: An Empowering Story of Yesterdays and Todays, was released in September of 2014. When she’s not writing, Rachel can be found dancing, baking, reading, and creating art with her children.

Rachel blogs over at White Sugar, Brown Sugar.  She also wrote four other books: Come Rain or Come Shine: A White Parent’s Guide to Adopting and Parenting Black Children, Encouragement for the Adoption and Parenting Journey: 52 Devotions & a Journal, Homeschooling Your Young Black Child, Poems for the Smart, Spunky, and Sensational Black Girl

Last year, I reviewed Rachel’s latest adorable children’s book, Poems for the Smart, Spunky, and Sensational Black Girl on the blog.  You can check out that review and my reflection here.  Connect with Rachel on Facebook or Instagram.

2. Sara Crutcher
Sara Picture
First-time author Sara Elizabeth Neal Crutcher believes her greatest blessing came at just six weeks old in Greensboro, North Carolina when she was adopted into a loving and supportive family. At five years old, Sara recalls her parents sitting her down to explain her adoption. Although at the time she did not fully understand what adoption meant, she was reassured that she was heart picked and surrounded by unconditional love. Sara wrote Heart Picked: Elizabeths Adoption Tale to share a glimpse of her journey and also to support adopted children and the families who love them. Sara is an advertising executive, entrepreneur and blogger. She graduated from Hampton University with a degree in advertising. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, reading novels, and playing her violin.  To learn more about Sara visit her website or connect with her on Twitter.

heart picked
My reflection:
It’s family week at school and little six-year-old Elizabeth is nervous about what her friends and everyone else will think of her dad.  You see, Elizabeth is adopted so she doesn’t look like either of her adopted parents.  Elizabeth’s mom tries to comfort her by telling her she was ‘heart picked’ especially for them.  Both of her parents explain what being adopted really means and in the end, Elizabeth understands just how special she truly is.

My kids are still too young to understand the concept of adoption, but when they are old enough I will use this book to explain it to them.  I think this book does a great job describing what it means to be adopted in an easy way for older children (ages 6 and up) to understand with cute, colorful illustrations to match.

The overall message of this book is wonderful: “love is what truly makes a family”.  It doesn’t matter if you all look alike, if there is love in your heart, that’s all you need.

3. Veronica N. Chapman

veronicachapman
Veronica N. Chapman is an entrepreneur, author, and playwright, having written and produced Ancestors Inc., a motivational play for teens, and The Advent of Planet Martyr: An Innovative Social Commentary, a self-published book. A graduate of Spelman College (B.A. in Spanish) and Babson College (M.B.A.), she is committed to using her gifts to act upon her ideas and improve the world. Each of her endeavors, Boxxout Enterprises, Potlucks for Progress, My Crowning Jewel, and I Know I Can!, are in line with this commitment. I Know I Can! is Veronica’s first children’s book.  To learn more about I Know I Can! and Veronica, connect with her on Facebook and on Twitter.

iknowican
My reflection: Since the tender age of two, Faith’s parents taught her she could do anything she wanted to do – and she believed them!  In her dreams, she visited different places around the world, met new people, and experienced different cultures.  The story goes on to follow Faith from being a toddler right through graduating from high school as the valedictorian of her class.

I love how empowering this book is for little girls!  It also exposes children to a few different world landmarks like the Louvre Museum in France and the Malecon in Cuba.  In addition, it features some famous African-American icons such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahalia Jackson, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Nina Simone.

After reading this book, children will easily come to understand that anything is possible along with the value of hard work.  At the end of the book, it reminds little readers that the world is theirs to explore and provides examples of a few fun things they can do in preparation for foreign travel.

4. Arnitris L. Strong
arnitis strong
Arnitris is the creator of Blessed be the Tie, which is dedicated to offering signature mommy and me experiences through events, products and services. She is the editor of The Refresh Guide, an online magazine committed to revealing the secrets of fabulous women everywhere. When she isn’t writing, Arnitris can usually be found where creative minds are mingling while rocking a fierce pair of heels. Connect with her on her websiteInstagram and twitter @arntrs77.

Nappy and the First Day of Kindergarten

nappyandthefirstdayofkindergarten
My reflection: The first day of Kindergarten finally arrived for little Lynn!  While she is excited about going to school, she had a serious case of butterflies in her tummy.  She explains her nervousness and excitement to her sister Destani, who in true older sibling fashion makes fun of her and calls her ‘Nappy’.  When Lynn finally gets to school she notices another girl in her class (Amy) is also scared about starting at a new school.  They instantly become friends and walk bravely into Kindergarten together.

My kids are only two and three, but I’m already dreading the day when they both go off to Kindergarten.  I already know I’m going to be a hot mess!  No doubt there will be tears and anxiety, but probably more on my end than the kids!

I think this book does a good job capturing what typical 4 and 5 year-olds may be feeling on the first day of Kindergarten, especially if it’s a brand new school.  This book lets little readers know that it’s ok to be nervous when trying and experiencing new and different things.  It’s also a story of self-acceptance, being brave, and friendship between two girls who are different, yet the same.  More upcoming titles are expected to be released later this year!

5. Cindy J. Cadet
2016-02-05 09.56.15
Cindy J. Cadet has worked with students in diverse age groups. After obtaining her MBA, she began her journey as a substitute teacher in the classroom with kindergarten children. She then worked in higher education administration. Cindy, a wife and mother, is very passionate about family life and solutions to building a strong and loving foundation. Being a mom has inspired her to create a fun story about a girl who is smart, adventurous and loves doing new things. Her two books are entitled: The Brownie Girl Zola Visits the Zoo: A Fun Day Adventure with Daddy and The Brownie Girl Adventures: Zola’s Family Vacation.  Cindy lives with her family in Connecticut.  Connect with Cindy on her website or visit her Facebook page.

zolazoo
My reflection: Zola and her dad are ready for a day at the zoo!  What types of animals will they see?  What sights and sounds will they experience?  Adventure awaits!  Oh, and there’s a sweet surprise at the end, but I won’t spoil it for you!

We haven’t taken our kids to the zoo yet, but I can’t wait to go – perhaps this summer!  I imagine our first time going will be similar to Zola and her dad’s visit.  I love all of the different animals featured in this book and the fact that she and her dad spent some quality time together.  Father/daughter time is so important for helping to raise strong, independent, and confident girls.  I think this is a fun, cute story for little girls and dads to share.

The books in the Brownie Girl Adventure series are designed for families to read together.  Parents read to their child and when the child can read on their own they can read it to their parents or friends.  Each story is meant to encourage families to spend quality time together and empower children to write their own stories.  Proceeds of these books are shared with two children’s charities.

It’s Giveaway Time…Again!
I just love giveaways, don’t you?  Keeping up with the Black History Month theme, all five of these amazing authors have agreed to give away 1 FREE copy of each of their children’s books!!  That’s 6 books in all – up for grabs (they might even be signed copies):  Poems for the Smart, Spunky, and Sensational Black GirlBlack Girls Can: An Empowering Story of Yesterdays and TodaysHeart Picked: Elizabeths Adoption TaleI Know I Can!Nappy and the First Day of Kindergarten (e-book), and The Brownie Girl Zola Visits the Zoo: A Fun Day Adventure with Daddy (e-book).

Crow Made a Friend Book Tour & Giveaway!

I’m thrilled to be a part of the TLC tour for Crow Made a Friend by Margaret Peot!

crowmadeafriend
Recommended for Children Ages: 4 to 8
Themes: Easy Readers, Animals/Fiction, Friendship

Book Synopsis
Try, try again is the lesson Crow teaches beginning readers in this picture book reader. Crow was all alone. But like all crows, he was very clever. Using autumn leaves for wings, sticks for the body and a crab apple for the head, Crow made a friend! But winter winds blew in, destroying his creation. Undaunted, Crow fashioned another bird friend out of snow but could not prevent it from melting in the warm spring sun. Alone again, Crow heard the caw, caw, caw of a real, live bird. Together they built a nest and by summer, Crow had a family. This warm, satisfying story, celebrates perseverance and ingenuity.

Reflection
Making new friends can be intimidating, but it’s definitely rewarding. After all, friends form a big part of our life. They are the ones who walk through life together, share our ups and downs and joys and pains. Without friends, life wouldn’t be the same at all.  The lonely crow in this book certainly understands this so he goes on a quest to make a new friend and ends up starting a new family at the end.

The kids and I really enjoy this book!  It’s a wonderful, charming, beautifully illustrated, short story that my three-year old daughter can read word for word on her own.  It’s a quick read and perfect for beginning readers to enjoy over and over.  I think the overall messages about the importance of friends and continual effort are easy enough even for the youngest readers to understand.

After reading the book, the kids and I did the craft activity that was included to make our own “friend”.  I adore doing craft activities with the kids after reading the book as it seems to help reinforce what we’ve just read while having fun.  You can download your very own crow activity sheet here!

I’m a true believer that children’s books teach us some of life’s most valuable lessons.  The valuable lesson I took away from this book is the key to making new friends is YOU!  Friends will not magically come your way.  It takes time, trying different things, and lots of effort on your part.  Just like shopping for shoes, you have to try on lots of pairs before finding the right fit.

Boscov’s Grand Opening Plus an Instagram Giveaway!

There’s a new “kid’ on the block in my neck of the woods in Connecticut.  Boscov’s department store opened its doors to the general public last Thursday, October 8th.

I had the privilege of attending the grand opening of their 44th store with a few other fellow bloggers who were also invited.  This was my very first blogger event so I was super excited to be there and have the opportunity to connect with other local bloggers, see the store, and get a glimpse of what other bloggers experience at these types of events.  Thanks again, Boscov’s for the invite!

Ok, now on to the good stuff…

Processed with Moldiv

If you have never been to a Boscov’s department store, let me tell you 5 reasons why you should totally consider going:

1. They sell books!
Of course, I had to mention books first, right?  Now, before you get your hopes up let me warn you they don’t have a large selection of books available, at least not yet anyway.  However, if you’re a Dr. Seuss fan, they have a nice variety of those types of books.  I also saw some books that would make nice baby shower gifts like the 1940’s classic book Pat the Bunny (one of the best-selling children’s books of all time) which was packaged nicely in a clear box ready for gift-giving.

2. They provide FREE gift wrapping throughout the entire year!
How many times have you gone to a store to buy a gift, and then turn around and go to another store to purchase either a gift bag, wrapping paper or tissue paper?  Too many times, right?  One of the great things about Boscov’s is they offer this service to their customers FREE of charge throughout the entire year, not just during the holidays.  You can take your purchase directly to the gift wrapping counter to have them wrapped and receive quality customer service with a smile.

3. They have activities for children!
One of the many things that makes Boscov’s unique is their commitment to serving local communities.  They have a long history of charitable programs and activities for children and adults. Throughout the year, Boscov’s holds fundraising and awareness events for local community non-profit organizations in their community auditorium.  Some of their events may include: famous entertainers, fashion shows, face painters, balloon artists, and health and wellness classes.

4. They have a candy department in the store!
At Boscov’s they make their own fudge and its served fresh everyday.  They also have a great selection of chocolates, candy and other sweet treats.

5. They have an exceptional bargain section!
I don’t ever recall seeing a bargain section in a department store that actually has good, quality items.  I scored some really great deals in the bargain section like a 2 quart tea kettle for only $2.99!  Most of the items I saw started as low as $1.00 and went up to $9.99 or more.  Get a head start on purchasing your stocking stuffers now!

In addition to all of the wonderful things I’ve mentioned above, Boscov’s also sells everything you’d find in any other department store like: brand-name merchandise including apparel, shoes and accessories for men, women and children, home furnishings, toys, cosmetics, and small appliances.

If you’re one of my local subscribers who lives in Connecticut, I highly recommend stopping by to check out Boscov’s at the Westfield Meriden Mall!  Right now until October 17th they’re having a mega grand opening sale with blockbuster deals.  Plus, there are activities for children and you can register to win some fantastic prizes.  Also, Academy Award Winner Shirley Jones and her son Patrick Cassidy are performing alone or together in the community auditorium.

ABOUT A TALE OF HIGHLY UNUSUAL MAGIC:

Kai and Leila are both finally having an adventure. For Leila, that means a globe-crossing journey to visit family in Pakistan for the summer; for Kai, it means being stuck with her crazy great-aunt in Texas while her mom looks for a job. In each of their bedrooms, they discover a copy of a blank, old book called The Exquisite Corpse. Kai writes three words on the first page—and suddenly, they magically appear in Leila’s copy on the other side of the planet. Kai’s words are soon followed by line after line of the long-ago, romantic tale of Ralph T. Flabbergast and his forever-love, Edwina Pickle. As the two take turns writing, the tale unfolds, connecting both girls to each other, and to the past, in a way they never could have imagined.

A heartfelt, vividly told multicultural story about fate and how our stories shape it.

PRAISE FOR A TALE OF HIGHLY UNUSUAL MAGIC:
“Magic! It’s everywhere—in music, in moths, in an old handwritten book. But the real magic is the exquisite storytelling that sweeps us along until the last wonderful page. This is a book that leaves shimmers in the very air.” — Kathi Appelt, New York Times bestselling author of The Underneath and Keeper

“Lisa Papademetriou’s prose and sense of place dazzles the ear and eye, while the adventure and mystery binds us from page to page. Now that’s sleight of hand!” — Rita Williams-Garcia, Newbery Honor Winner

“A beguiling tale of… enduring love and nascent self-discovery.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A rollicking adventure of forbidden love and magic”  –School Library Journal

“Begging to be read aloud… a fun book for middle-grade readers, and it will surely inspire them to read—and write—more.” –Booklist

Seven Ways to Encourage Your Child to Love Reading & A Giveaway!

Hello, October!

Since the fall season is upon us, I thought it would be a good time to discuss a few simple ways to help your children fall in love with reading and books if they haven’t already.  Even if your little ones are already avid readers or seem to love books there are still some things you may want to consider doing to enhance your children’s reading and read aloud experiences.

With so much technology and social media available today, how do you get your children to choose reading books over watching television, sitting in front of the computer, playing on the iPad, or texting their friends?

Below are a few ideas that may help.  Read on.

1. Make your children a part of the story
Children love looking at pictures of other babies and children in books, especially when it’s their own pictures.    One way to make your child a part of the story is to create personalized books through online websites like storieChild.

storieChild

I found out about storieChild a few weeks ago while surfing the web.  storieChild offers one-of-a-kind story books and baby books for children ages 0-8+.   They pair technology with creative arts while guiding you through the process of creating an amazing story for your child.  Their products are designed by artists and storytellers and are available exclusively through pre-sale on their website.

Creating your own story book with storieChild is super simple.  Say goodbye to those complicated websites that are way too time consuming and nearly impossible to figure out.  With storieChild not only do you get a beautiful, personalized book with your child/children as the star, but you also get an actual story to go along with it.  Oh, and did I mention the entire process only takes about 10 – 25 minutes?

If you’re as excited about storieChild as I am, YOU can get in on the fun too!  That’s right, you can win your very own softcover customized storieChild book for FREE (pick any story of your choice)!  All of the details are listed at the end of this post, but read on for more tips.

2. Bring them new books every day
No, I’m not talking about going out and purchasing a new book each day for your child.  I mean show them at least 1 book every day either from your home library collection or your local library.  For example, every Monday (or sometimes on Saturday) I do a library haul.  I pick out through a stack of children’s books, read them, and bring my favorites back to the kids.  Then each day during the week I read the kids different books or sometimes we’ll read old favorites that we already have.

The idea is that if you are trying to sell kids on books you should bring them books day after day.  These books should be ones that you think are: exciting, funny, poignant, adventurous, beautiful, interesting, or mysterious.  Bring your children books that support their current interests, make them wonder, stretch their imaginations, light them up with amazement, laugh, feel empathy, and connect with their own lives.  Sometimes you can bring them new books that are hot off the press, and old favorites from your childhood.  You get the idea.

3. Let them choose what they want to read, even “twaddle” (occasionally)
If you don’t know what “twaddle” is, it’s basically literature that has been dumbed-down and doesn’t add any value.  I don’t currently let my children choose their own books unless it’s an alphabet book.  However, I know as they get older they’ll want to start choosing what they read and I’m ok with that as long as it’s not all the time.

As the kids age, I’ll have to learn to back off and let them read what catches their eye and ignites their imagination as they build their relationship with reading. If it is twaddle books, I’ll have to assure myself it is okay if they start with worthless ones.

While I still have control over choosing their books, I’ll continue to guide them into the amazing ones until they start telling me to “back off”.  So if all your child wants to read is comic books then let them and be grateful they are reading something.

4. Practice storytelling with story cards
A few months ago, I wrote a post about a simple way to improve your storytelling skills by using eBoo story cards.  You can read more about the story cards here.  The kids and I still use our story cards every once in a while and I can honestly say I’ve seen progression since we first started using them, especially with my 3 year-old.  And for the price I paid (under $10.00 per pack) it was worth it.

5. Explore different libraries in different cities, states or countries
I’ve taken the kids to several libraries throughout Connecticut where we live and even to a couple in a different state.  We attend story time events as well as other programs and activities all for FREE.  I believe just by exposing kids to libraries helps them develop a love of reading and books in general.  Also, when we go to story time events they have the benefit of hearing someone else read to them and learn to sit attentively and listen with a group of children in a different environment.  A win-win.

6. Entice children and make them curious about books
I’ve noticed whenever I start clutching a children’s book I just read myself and start saying things like, “I love this new book…it’s so good!” the kids are instantly intrigued and want to know what the book is.  Try it next time and see if you are nearly stampeded by your kids dying to read it next.

7. Read your own books/magazines in front of your children
I’m sure you’ve read this tip before numerous times, but in order to build a culture of literacy in your home it’s important for your children to see you reading often.  Telling them, “Reading is important!” is pointless, if you never sit down in front of them and eagerly dive into your own reading material. If all they see is you collapsing in front of the TV or constantly sneaking off to your computer or checking your phone when you are tired or bored, they will learn that this is how one spends the invaluable minutes of one’s life.  Remember, YOUR attitude toward books and reading will likely be your child’s attitude as well.  Be a good role model to your kids.

I believe the only true gateway into the world of reading, is by motivating kids to want to read something – anything.  When they start to realize the wonder of books, the places they can go, the people they can meet, and the things they can learn through books, I think only then can you start to stand a real chance at helping them become successful and lifelong readers.

Don’t worry if your child isn’t “there” yet, meaning they don’t have a real interest in books or reading…it’s ok…I understand!  As the parent it’s important to keep trying and remain excited.  Make reading a priority in your own life and your kids will likely follow suit.  Every child is different, but I believe you can encourage every child to like books once you find what appeals to them.

Your turn: How do you encourage your children to love reading and books?  Feel free to share in the comments.

I am thrilled our friends over at storieChild were gracious enough to sponsor this awesome giveaway!  This would make a great holiday or birthday gift – wouldn’t you agree?

Resumes for Children: A Book Review & A Giveaway!

Resumes for Children 17 Years Old and Under by Donna Kristine Manley

resumes

Do you have a resume for your child?  At what age do you think it’s appropriate for young people to start creating resumes? Eighteen? Sixteen?  How about thirteen or eight?  Think that’s too young?  Well, think again.

It’s no secret the job market is fast-paced and highly competitive.  I remember a few years ago the social media website LinkedIn decided to allow kids as young as 13 to create profiles on its career-minded networking site.  (Imagine being in competition for a job with a 13 year-old!)  Aside from LinkedIn, there are a number of new ways teenagers and pre-teens can start preparing for their careers and building life skills — even if they’re unsure what, exactly, they want to do when they grow up.  That’s where creating a resume for your child can come in handy.

Book Summary
Resumes for Children 17 – Years Old Under is a detailed guide of sample resumes that show how children’s talents, skills, abilities, and challenges can propel them to success. Inside the book you’ll meet a student pilot with a 3rd Class Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Medical Certificate, a child book reviewer, a Junior Open Water Diver and more. The sample cover letters are guides to show parents how to obtain other peoples’ money to assist in the growth and development of their children.  Resumes for Children 17 Years Old and Under was awarded a Best Parenting Book badge by radicalparenting.com and is a Mom’s Choice Awards Gold Recipient.

Reflection
I don’t quite remember my first resume, but I do recall listing every hobby I’d ever had to make my part-time job at the library look more substantial.  Where were books like Resumes for Children when I was growing up?

I think this book does a good job providing several samples to use for creating a child’s resume and cover letter.  There are sample resumes for entrepreneurs, volunteers, babysitters/pet care, hobbies, inventors, aspiring medical professionals and more!  I also like the space in the back of the book for recording your reflections, ideas and resources.  These will be useful for writing down your child’s interests, hobbies, volunteer opportunities, activities, or hands-on experiences as they evolve over time.

The author also talks about some reasons why children need a resume and offers some pearls of wisdom at the end of the book which I found to be helpful.

While I don’t plan on creating a resume for either of my children anytime soon, I think this book will definitely come in handy when I’m ready to take on this task.  I believe Resumes for Children is great tool to use to help you to chronicle your child’s academic and extracurricular history.

Creating a resume is an important initial step in the process of obtaining employment, volunteer opportunities or applying to private schools. In addition, a resume can help a student in future academic pursuits. Teaching your child to identify his/her skills, talents and achievements is key to putting together a winning resume.

Since this book was written almost ten years ago, one suggestion I would make for a potential book update would be to limit contact information on the resume samples.  Meaning do not list a physical address, phone number or school name.  Contact information for your child can always be sent directly the the hiring manager, volunteer coordinator, etc.  Maybe it’s just me, but I’m overly cautious about sharing any information about my children, especially online.  Electronic or hard copies of resumes and cover letters can end up anywhere therefore as a parent, I believe you must be very thoughtful about what personal information is on them.

Are you on the fence about creating a resume for your child or do you think this sounds absurd?  Think of it this way: the reality is that some scholarship, private, middle and high school applications give you spaces in which they expect you to write down your child’s extracurricular activities, community service and awards. It can be a painful process if you’ve got nothing to write about your child in those spaces.

Your turn:  Do you have a resume for your child already?  Are you thinking about creating one or not?  Feel free to share in the comments.
