Parents Best Children’s Books 2021: My Favorites

Parents Magazine has unveiled their list of “Best” Children’s Books of 2021. This is their 13th annual list! Below, I’ve chosen to highlight some of my favorites from their list. I’ve read all the books listed below except for the board book Washer and Dryer’s Big Job which I fully intend to order and read because…laundry. I enjoy doing laundry.

Connecticut Bookstagrammers Meetup: Possible Futures Bookstore

Our second Bookstagrammers meetup was another amazing event! This time we met up at @possiblefuturesbooks in New Haven, CT. If you’ve never been to this bookstore, you’re in for a treat…it’s gorgeous. The owner Lauren and her team have done an amazing job curating so many wonderful books, puzzles, and accessories.

We all shared books we’re currently reading and discussed forthcoming bookish events happening in the tri-state area. Then we shopped to purchase books and other items. If you missed us today, our next meeting will be in June.

Last night was magical night at The Bushnell @thebushnell in Hartford, CT for the opening of Wicked.

Seeing this iconic Broadway show for the second time was like rediscovering a cherished boon from years ago—Elphaba and Glinda’s journey still captivated my heart just as it did before. The energy in the theater was electric!

Do you know the story of Mamie Tape and her incredible fight for education back in the 1880s?

Mamie was a young girl living in San Francisco who wanted to attend the public school nearest to her home. However, there was a problem—she was of Chinese descent, and at that time, Chinese children were being denied admission to public schools in California.

So, Mamie’s parents decided to take action. They filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco School Board, arguing that their daughter should have the right to receive an education like any other child.

Mamie’s case gained attention and eventually reached the California Supreme Court. In 1885, the court ruled in her favor, stating that the school board’s policy of excluding Chinese children was discriminatory and unlawful. This landmark decision was a significant victory for civil rights and paved the way for equal educational opportunities for all children in California.

Mamie Tape’s bravery and her family’s determination not only secured her right to attend school but also helped advance the cause of equality in education for generations to come. Her story reminds us of the importance of standing up for what’s right and the impact that one person’s courage can have on the lives of many.
